At the center of the mesmerizing rolling fields, dwelt a shepherd boy. His life was untarnished, and unsophisticated. His main role was to tend to his flock of ewes.
Their soft bleating and the whispering of the wind across the solo tree on the peak were his main associates. Day upon day, watching over his charges instilled in him a notion of calm satisfaction.
However, there were occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would yearn for companionship. On one such day from sheer tedium, the shepherd boy orchestrated a troublesome plan.
Tales of wild beasts hunting on sheep had been heard times and again in the village. So, the boy chose to leveraged this fear and played a trick on the inhabitants.
One day he dashed into the village yelling “Wolf! There is a wolf that has taken my sheep!” The terrified villagers ran up the hills to help but saw nothing threatening.
The boy chuckled at the confusion on their faces. This prank continued for a couple of more days. However, one morning, a real wolf actually attack the flock. The shepherd boy raced for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but could rescue only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he returned to the town only to be met with a reprimand on honesty and the consequences of dishonesty.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences read more of lying and the risks of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once broken, is difficult to reclaim. It's a story as pertinent today as it was anciently.
